NATASHA GOMPERTS

I enjoy the visceral qualities of porcelain, the labour of working with reclaimed stoneware and the uncertain complexities of glaze. I push these muds into more and more demanding poses, exploring how weight and mass create multiple tipping points and conflicting configurations of balance.

Figure and ground are always concerns, whether the wild and open or urban and enclosed. Fascinated by London’s clay ground and our consistently changing relationship to it, I subvert the human drive to drill and in-fill, to discard and construct, turning over the earth’s surface to make sculpture and vessel forms - conundrums demanding to be handled and re-positioned.

We have little choice or control over our physical environments but in my shrunken world, despite the heady risks of ceramic firings, I am the maker.
